Please note that this course is specific to the centre where it is issued. Your personal sailing will need to be at the RYA Seamanship level in order to successfully complete this qualification, as well as getting a recommendation from the Centre Manager. RYA Dinghy Instructor Pre-Entry Assessment

  The RYA require the Pre Entry Assessment to be passed by all candidates prior to them taking the RYA Dinghy Instructor course. The 1 day Assessment will test your sailing skills up to RYA Advanced sailing level technique including RYA Seamanship Skills.

  Sailing skills such as man overboard, sailing tight circles, sailing a triangular course and sailing a follow-my-leader course will be assessed to advanced sailing level technique. Successful completion will enable the student to join the RYA Dinghy Instructor course. It is important that you satisfy yourself that you can sail to the required standard before taking the assessment.

  The assessment is for competent, experienced sailors who already hold the RYA advanced sailing modules or are at that level with excellent RYA Seamanship Skills.

RYA Dinghy Instructor

Become an RYA Instructor and start a career inspiring the next generation.

You will learn and practice effective communication styles and teaching methods. Guided throughout and assessed by RYA coach assessors, you will be well on your way to becoming an excellent sailing instructor.

If you are taking the RYA Pre Entry Assessment with us prior to the RYA Dinghy Instructor course and fail the assessment for any reason, the RYA will not allow you to progress onto the RYA Dinghy Instructor course. In these circumstances we are unable to refund any monies paid, but will carry the RYA Dinghy Instructor course forward for up to 12 months.

RYA DINGHY ADVANCED INSTRUCTOR

Candidates must hold the RYA instructor certificate and will usually have recorded at least one season's experience of teaching sailing since qualifying. Candidates will be skilled to at least the level of the Performance Sailing and Sailing with Spinnakers courses and should have previous powerboat handling experience in a teaching environment.

This is a two day course covering the teaching a boat handling, the use of spinnakers and 5 essentials coaching to the required standard, as well as powerboat driving. 

 

Candidates will be assessed on a continuous basis afloat, and may be given a theory test. Upon successful completion of the course, the Coach/Assessor will sign their logbooks.

RYA DINGHY RACE INSTRUCTOR

The course will include the organisation of club racing, preparation and management of the Start Racing course and instructional techniques afloat including the use of race training exercises. On successful completion, the candidates logbook will be signed by the Coach/Assessor.

RYA MULTI-HULL INSTRUCTOR

This course will provide you with the skills to teach both Start Sailing and Basic Skills in multi-hull dinghies. You must be a confident catamaran sailor with experience of sailing catamarans with and without asymmetric spinnakers. 

Over the course of the weekend participants will also be expected to demonstrate their own personal catamaran sailing ability.

You will need to bring your G14 logbook and a copy of your current first aid qualification. All applicants for RYA instructor qualifications need to be RYA members in order to be eligible to be awarded the instructor qualification.

RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor

This ever popular 5-day course is for competent windsurfers who are looking to teach the RYA Start Windsurfing course and the RYA Youth Windsurfing Scheme.  Students should be at Intermediate Non-Planing standard, hold the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate, a valid First Aid Certificate recognised by the RYA and RYA Safe and Fun Safeguarding certificate.

RYA Intermediate Windsurf Instructor

A great way to take your windsurfing instructing to the next level and start to coach the higher level schemes, introducing students to more dynamic techniques with the thrills and spills of the sport and getting them into the harness and footstraps. The intermediate course and instructor training is assessed in two competencies, non-planing and planing, and is the first instructor course to incorporate the Fastfwd coaching tool.

The following is required in order to attend the course;

  • Personal sailing at Intermediate planing personal sailing certificate and the beachstarting and non-planing carve gybe clinics (outcome would be Intermediate Non Plaining instructor) or Advanced personal sailing certificate with waterstart and carve gybe clinics (potential outcome Intermediate Planing instructor)
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate recognized by the RYA.
  • RYA Safe & Fun Safeguarding Certificate.
  • RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor with logged 50 hours teaching experience.
  • 16 years of age.

RYA Powerboat Instructor

The R.Y.A Powerboat Instructor course is a four day course that covers all aspects of becoming an R.Y.A Powerboat Instructor.

An R.Y.A Powerboat Instructor will be able to instruct the R.Y.A Power Boat Level 1 course, the R.Y.A Power Boat Level 2 course and if they have the R.Y.A Safety Boat Certificate this course as well.

 

Please note: this is a four day course and includes the Skills Assessment module.

Course Prerequisites: All candidates must have a valid R.Y.A First Aid qualification before attending.

Previous experience required: R.Y.A Powerboat Level 2 with one season of full time driving experience, or 5 years part-time experience.

BCU Foundation Safety & Rescue Training

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Foundation Safety and Rescue Training course is intended for all paddlers, coaches and volunteers, irrespective of craft or discipline choice.
 
It provides training on key skills needed to operate safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment. These skills then form the foundations for safety and rescue throughout British Canoeing Awarding Body awards.
 
Age limits: 14 years
 
Previous experience required: Paddle Explore Award, 2 Star Award or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to complete the course

BCU Paddlesport Instructor

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Instructor is an entry level qualification.
 
The qualification will support the instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.
